Dark Chocolate Orange Cake

Dark Chocolate Orange Cake

I adored this cake at one of our Clandestine Cake Meetings, and we all demanded the recipe from the lady who made it. This is a big thing for me, as I’m not usually a fan of chocolate cake.  I really thought it was possibly the most delicious chocolate cake ever.

She had adapted it from this recipe, replacing the plain chocolate with orange chocolate. Having experimented, I can tell you that Lindt Intense Orange does the job best – other brands are definitely inferior, and your cake just won’t taste the same.

I wasn’t keen on the icing in this recipe either. So instead I usually treat my cake to Mary Berry’s Fudge Icing as used in this recipe, but you need to remember to be quick about it, as this icing doesn’t take kindly to hanging around whilst you titivate and smooth and whatnot.

And then of course, it’s only a step further to go the whole hog and decorate with Terry’s Dark Chocolate Orange segments.
My version of the cake is gluten free, and I often make it and the icing dairy-free too. Do note that even though I used Dark Terry Chocolate Orange segments, these have skimmed milk powder in them. Practical to the last and as long as it isn’t going to have a serious impact on you, you can always whip the segment off and give it to someone who isn’t dairy intolerant before you dive in.
